CENTRAL Intelligence Organisation (CIO) deputy director, Elias Kanengoni, has died, a Cabinet minister confirmed on Friday.
Kanengoni who was the head of the spy agency’s internal operations collapsed and died at his Concession farm on Wednesday.
Information and Publicity Minister Webster Shamu confirmed the development but could not give more details.
Kanengoni, then a CIO officer and the then Zanu PF MP for Chiwundura Kizito Chivamba shot Gweru businessman Patrick Kombayi in the run up to the 1990 Parliamentary elections.
Kombayi, who was challenging Vice President Simon Muzenda for the Gweru urban seat, sustained serious injuries and had to seek treatment in London.
Chivamba and Kanengoni were sentenced to seven years in jail after being convicted for attempted murder only to be pardoned by President Robert Mugabe.
Kangengoni went on to enjoy a meteoric rise in the structures of the CIO.
