Splendid hotel and a near by cafe in Ouagadougou was attacked late on Friday by gunmen said to be members of the Alqaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. State information says atleast 20 people were feared dead after 6 gunmen attacked the hotel popular with westerners and the diplomatic community. About 65 hostages rescued from the hotel and 10 bodies found at the near by cafe.
The siege and hostage taking was ended by military assault supported by the French and American security personnel on ground in the Burkinabe capital.
Burkina Faso’s new government was sworn in November of 2015 after long serving former president Blaise Campaore was edged out of office by a popular uprising. He took over from Thomas Sankara after he was assassinated in a military coup on October 15, 1987. Formerly known as Upper Volta, Burkina Faso means the “Land of the Upright”.
