Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza dies from Heart failure
Burundian authorities on Tuesday announced the passing of strong man and outgoing president Pierre Nkurunziza at age 55.
He was hospitalised over the weekend and showed signs of improvement. On Monday, he went into a sudden cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead after efforts to revive him became unsuccessful.
Pierre Nkurunziza ruled Burundi for 15 years and after a bid to seek a third term election in 2015, the country went into political unrest over the legitimacy of his ambition.
National elections were held in Burundi recently in May and a successor has being choosen. Before his sudden demise, outgoing President Pierre Nkurunziza was due to step down from office in August 2020.
