Reasons for Twitter ban in Nigeria

Following the removal of President Buhari’s tweet where he referred to the Nigerian civil war which lasted for 30 months killing over a million. He warned those supporting the breakdown of law and order while destroying critical federal government infrastructures that they will be treated in the language that they understand.

Twitter is also been accused of threatening the peace and stability in Nigeria by allowing its platform be used for the spreading of fake news and misinformation.

The communications commissions has directed telecoms and internet service providers to block access to the twitter domain.

Many online users in Nigeria have resulted to using virtual private networks that hides the internet protocol address. They create anonymity thereby evading any blacklisted website and online services.

As an intervention, the government announced in a statement made available online the “licensing of all internet streaming services and social media operations in Nigeria”.
