Nelson Mandela has been discharged from a Pretoria hospital where he was on admission since June 8 for a protracted lung infection, a condition he developed as a result of poor exposure to limestone while toiling at a quarry in Robben Island where he was serving a long term imprisonment for anti apartheid struggles in South Africa.

He was taken by an ambulance from Pretoria about 50 minutes drive to his Johannesburg home where his room has been reconfigured to an intensive care facility. The United Nations has recognized Mandela’s birthday, July 18, as an international day to honor him.
