SA Schools to Remain Closed Under Level 4 Restrictions as 297 cases recorded in a day
At the end of an initial 35 days lockdown before the introduction of the level 4 restrictions, South Africa has conducted a total of 207,530 COVID-19 tests nationwide. An increase of 297 new cases was recorded in a single day bringing the number of positive cases to 5,647 with total recoveries of 2,073 and 103 total fatalities. The Minister of Health announced that 10,403 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours.
Universities and other tertiary institutions will not be allowed to resume on campuses under the level 4 lockdown restrictions except for final year medical students who will be required to assist medical health personnel in hospitals. Most tertiary institutions are currently running their academic processes through online remote learning platforms.
Grade 12 and grade 7 students may resume on the 1st of June, the basic education minister said that a proposal has been made to this effect while waiting for the outcome, the month of May will be used to sanitize the school environment and classrooms.
